Trump’s Story

2020 was the year of Covid. So we were all bored. A horse sale came up on my Facebook. It was the New Mexico Select Yearling sale that was moved to Guthrie, OK. There were over 1200 horses listed on the catalog. I thought “surely with that many we can get something cheap”. Me and Jimmy went to Guthrie and were immediately intimidated. Yearlings going for over $300,000. We said “looks like we won’t come home with a horse”. But instead of giving up we woke up early the next day and studied ALL of the stud colts. I was overwhelmed with how many horses there were to look at. How do you choose????As we are walking one, I’m standing in front of a stall of another colt. I feel a nose wiggling through the bars to mess with my hair. Probably the most inquisitive horse we had seen. We decided to get him out. He was so calm and just had a presence about him. The only thing we could fault him for was- he was by a stallion who’s first foal crop was this colts year, his dam had not produced anything and she herself only won about $4,800 on the track. So unproven bloodlines. (At the time) But my good friend Tyesha had just bred her cool DTF mare to Duponte, so I thought if she could take that chance, so could we! (Fast forward to today First Fervor has produced closer to $600,000 my unproven bloodlines sure got proven fast) Our favorite happened to be hip #489 so we had to watch a lot of horses sell before him. We even bid on several horses. When he came into the ring he just stood, taking it all in, like the best minded ranch horse at the race horse sale haha. We had a budget that we both agreed, would not go over. We bid, we stressed, and we won our favorite for under our budget. I’d like to thank those unproven bloodlines for that. We happily went to his stall to see him. Yes I knew his registered name before we even bid on him, but when we went to his stall- that’s when it hit me. Dupont was Jeff Gordan’s sponsor in the NASCAR races. Jeff Gordan also happened my Dad’s favorite driver. My dad unexpectedly passed away a little over a year before that day. It was just a little God Wink that he was supposed to come home with us. Being a 2019 model, I had planned on doing the Futurities on him in 2023 as a four year old. Well he got hurt playing in his pen and was put on stall rest for 8 months at the end of his two year old year. So he was just barely broke. I knew that if I was going to try to promote a stallion, I needed to give him his best chance. And that would be holding him back to run as a 5 year old. So his futurity year would now be 2024– 24 is Jeff Gordan’s number (another God Wink) I took him to meet my Grandpa in Stanton when he was just a long yearling. My grandpa taught me a lot about horses. He had an eye for a race horse too. He could tell you if they’d make it or not. He told me he would be hard to outrun in the future and that I probably wouldn’t suck on the track with him haha. My Grandpa passed away before he could see me run Trump in person. But I know he is tickled pink that he was right. And he would for sure let me know that he told me so. We also came up with the name “Trump” because it was 2020 and Trump was supposed to win the election again. Fast forward to 2024 Trump does win again and it’s our Trump’s futurity year. I could go on and on about how special he is. I know my dad sent him to me when I needed him most. And my grandpa put the extra set of running wings on him.
